What is the standard tuning of a 12-string acoustic guitar?

The standard tuning of a 12-string acoustic guitar is generally E3•E2 A3•A2 D4•D3 G4•G3 B3•B3 E4•E4 (starting from the lowest to the highest).

If you have had a regular 6-string guitar before, is pretty much the same tuning, but adding 6 more stings with the first four (from lowest to highest) being one octave apart, and first two (from highest to lowest) tuned in unison.

What things should I consider when buying a 12-string acoustic guitar?

First off, the brand. You don’t want to buy a guitar from a company that makes poor quality guitars. So, stay with whatever is usually named with a great reputation and you will be fine.

At the same time, don’t get this wrong. There are many brands out there with great guitars that don’t really have the popularity that they deserve. It’s just a matter of researching what others have said about their work.

You will also want to consider how the guitar was made, and what types of materials it is made from. These things will always affect the tone of the instrument.

How did you choose these best 12-string acoustic guitars?

I tried basing my research on various things: quality, affordability, popularity, and reputation. What I did is that I tried finding a balance between all of this things.

At the same time…

I also made sure the list has variation, meaning they all aren’t very cheap, while they all aren’t expensive

Which one is the best 12-string acoustic guitar for beginners?

All of these guitars will work just fine for beginners out there.

Have in mind that with 12-strings guitars you will need to push a bit harder into the strings.

One thing I would say is to consider your level of playing and think about whether or not you should buy a 12-string first.

In my personal experience, it was harder to play a 12-string without previous knowledge of how to play a regular acoustic guitar. So, if you are buying a 12-string guitar as your first guitar/instrument, make sure you physically try them at a local store.

By doing this, you will be able to see how different they feel and how difficult it might be for you to learn.

What songs can I play on a 12-string acoustic guitar?

Among the most popular ones that I was able to find were: Boston’s More than a Feeling, Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’, Bon Jovi’s Wanted Dead or Alive, Roger Hodgson’s Give a Little Bit, Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, and Hotel California by The Eagles.

There are surely many more songs that feature acoustic 12-string guitars, but these ones are just the ones that come to my mind at the moment.

Feel free to comment any other that you know of.

How do I tune a 12-string acoustic guitar?

Tuning a 12-string guitar is more complicated than tuning a 6-string guitar.

There are many ways in which you can tune a guitar. As we moved forward with technology, it is a lot easier to get it right by simply using our phones for example.

Use the standard tuning E3•E2 A3•A2 D4•D3 G4•G3 B3•B3 E4•E4, and you won’t really have any problems. If it helps, try looking for an app that was specially made for 12-string guitars.

Just play the string you want to tune, and by looking at the screen of your phone, see whether you need to lower or not the pitch of it.

This video by JustinGuitar on YouTube is a very good one explaining things like tuning and tricks in a 12-string acoustic guitar.

What is the difference between a 12-string and a 6-string acoustic guitar?

The biggest and most obvious difference is the number of strings. A 12-string guitar will have 12 strings, and a 6-string guitar will have 6 strings (it sounds bad, but there’s no other way of putting it).

Just like that…

A 12-string guitar is going to have a heavier build to counteract all the extra stress from the strings, meaning a thicker neck, etc.

What are the benefits of owning 12-string acoustic guitars?

The sound of the guitar itself is, in my opinion, the biggest benefit.

With a 12-string guitar, you also have the chance of experimenting with your sound and style. If you go from playing a 6-string to a 12-string, you will feel like playing many other different things and will be able to come up with new ideas.

A 12-string guitar has a richer and fuller sound that simply can’t be matched by a 6-string guitar.
